![]() No matter how many times I've seen the movie, I find something new. There's a scene when you hear Regan screaming from upstairs and a distorted voice of Burke yelling, "just do it, you bitch!" You can see the glimpse of his face in certain shots and sometimes the shadow of the statue just sitting there like a quiet house guest.īurke, the movie director from the movie was a total creep and a perv and there's some subtext implying that he may have molested Regan. Pazuzu's subtle hints coat the entire film in an uneasy atmosphere. In the beginning when Marrin visits the statue, you see and hear dogs fighting he looks back at the statue and the sounds of snarling and barking become the soundtrack to the horrid, doglike visage of Pazuzu. Pazuzu, the demon from the film, is a protector of women and children as well as the bringer of pestilence, disease and controls the wind. Go and rewatch it with this bit of trivia in mind: Regardless of religion or beliefs this movie is very tame compared to other offerings these days. The acting really put this on the top for me (just learned that Miller is Jason Patrics father IRL, which I was getting something front he way he looked, but I couldn't place my finger on it.)Īll this to say great movie, 10/10. I expected to be much more horrified, but I felt much more relieved. I don't agree with everyone's opinion it's too heady on the beginning, to be truthful the first half of the movie is my favorite. It scared her when she was younger, and she was raised catholic. I forgot all about the movie until I met my now wife, and she really didn't want anything to do with it. My parents weren't religious, I think they just projected the fear they felt when they watched it when they were younger. I was not allowed to watch this movie growing up, but I was allowed to watch other horror. I finally found the courage to watch this film when I was about thirteen, (I'm fifty now), and it solidified my already burgeoning love of horror.Īnd that's why my home is now a museum to all things from that genre. I remember my Mum telling me that she saw it in the theatre and after it ended, the drive home was the most terrifying experience of her life. Oh and when she makes the draw open by itself. Regan: What an excellent day for an exorcism.įather Karras: But wouldn't that drive you out of Regan? I love every scene, whether it involves Regan, the Devil, or not. The Exorcist is my number one favourite movie of all time. When exploring the possibility of psychosis as the book contains a lot of info about demons.Įven when Karras tests the demon it acts very cleverly, never sharing it's knowledge, but reflecting back karras's knowledge or what the child could have known. ![]() Later the book goes missing and one of the houses staff finds it under Reagan's bed. For example after a party where Regan tells a guest he's 'going to die up there's (he's an astronaut) and urinates on the floor in front of everyone, one of the female guests brings by a book about the occult. I found the book did a good job to make you 'wonder', because it really thoroughly went through the medical route and left just enough doubt in there too. ![]() In the book the possession takes awhile to ramp up starting with irritability, poor focus. Howdy' in the Ouija board, there is also the rats ect. There's obviously the idea that she's conversing with the entity through 'Mr. this is a valid critique, but i was honestly hooked by frame one and i can’t wait to see it again. People have criticized it for being too long winded, especially in the beginning. i am just astounded by how good this was. and all this is driven home by the amazing performances by burstyn, blair, and von sydow.įinally, i expected a lot of the scary stuff to age poorly, but i found myself to be completely terrified by it. ![]() It really reminded me of “hereditary” in that sense where yes it is a horror film, but with that element stripped away, there would still be a heartbreaking and real story to tell. what i was not expecting was how smart, nuanced, and intelligent this movie is.Ī lot of times characters in horror movies are props, a target for whatever scare tactics the creators plan to incorporate in the film, but here at the heart of this surprisingly tragic story is a mother torn to shreds trying to understand and cure her daughter’s mental illness and a faithless priest hounded with guilt and regret. from its reputation, i was expecting just a normal 70s scare piece. Never in my life has a movie subverted and exceeded my expectations more than with this one. ![]()
